Assignment #5: Internet meme

The “Advice Dog” meme is an image macro series, which features the head of a smiling Labrador puppy on a six colored rainbow wheel background that provides somewhat unethical or sarcastic, advices to people. A properly constructed advice dog consists of 2 short phrases, one on top and one on the bottom, with the dog itself in between (urbandictionary.com).
Advice Dog was first published in 2006 on a forum tread on the website
themushroomkingdom.net/, which is a Super Mario fan site. The user “Mariko” asked for advices about kissing girls and in one of the responses, the user “TEM” (Evan Herrington) posts the original picture of his dog’s (Boba Fett) head on a color wheel background
(knowyourmeme.com). The post would later be awarded “post of the year” on the website.
The meme started getting adopted by other forums and made it onto 4chan’s /b/ within July, the same year. However, the meme wasn’t considered to be well known, until after it got posted as post #76.000.000 on 4chan. The following year (2009), Ferenc Somos created MemeGenerator.net/, which made it very easy for the average internet user to contribute with his or her own macro of many different memes.

*not to be confused with the unrelated, but similar search term: training advice for dogs, which might explain the baseline search rate prior to 2006.

As shown on the graph, the meme had its golden age between 2009 and 2012. Due to Google’s normalization of data, we can’t know the exact search rate, but we know the majority of search requests came from the U.S., the U.K. and Australia. As for 2013, MemeGenerator had created close to 55.000 advice dog images.
The advice dog meme gave rise to a whole series of spin-offs, commonly referred to as Advice Animals. The concept is still the same, but it’s no longer limited to a dog’s head. Also, all of the animals usually have their own characteristic personalities.

Assignment #5
The Cinnamon Challenge is a meme that became popular in 2007 (Google Insights for Search, 2004-2007) via YouTube for its ease of attempt (i.e.: accessibility to household items), simple procedure, and extreme reactions. This meme involves an individual attempting to swallow a tablespoon of cinnamon without coughing or vomiting and without drinking water (Know Your Meme, 2007-20013) in under 60 seconds (Wikipedia, 2013). This meme is attractive because anyone can do it; all it requires is cinnamon, a spoon, and a camera. It also seems very easy, which is why many people attempt it, thinking they can easily complete the challenge. The usual result, however, is that the individual coughs out a puff of orange accompanied by a facial expression of pain. He/she then typically runs to a source of water to flush the cinnamon out of the mouth. The challenger generally uploads the video to YouTube, allowing Internet users to compare their own experience or to get inspired to video their own.
The meme gained an initial interest in the Internet community in September of 2007, peaked in October, and then died down by the end of that year. Since then, there have been moments of heightened popularity, but not as much as when it first appeared. However, in December of 2011, its popularity started back on the rise. By February of 2012, the Cinnamon Challenge was more popular than it had ever been by far (Google Insights for Search, 2004-2007). So many Internet users were attempting the challenge and posting their videos that news reports depicting the health hazards became prevalent. At this time, the popularity of the meme slowed, although it is still circulating and being attempted today (Google Insights for Search, 2004-2007).
A meme that may have been influenced by this one is the Saltine Challenge. This involves an individual attempting to eat six saltine crackers without drinking anything in under 60 seconds (Wikipedia, 2013). Although this meme emerged around the same time as the Cinnamon Challenge, one may have been perpetuated the other. For example, a user could have learned about and attempted the Cinnamon Challenge, and then went searching for similar memes like the Saltine Challenge.
Here is a collage video of the Cinnamon Challenge:

And a clip of the puff of orange many challengers experience:

Assignment 5: “Imma Let You Finish” (Kanye West) Meme

The meme, “Imma Let You Finish,” became popular in 2009 after Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift’s VMA award acceptance speech for Best Female Video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. When Taylor Swift stepped up to the podium to accept her award, Kanye West also came up on stage and took the microphone from her to say:

“Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, Imma let you finish but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time…one of the best videos of all time!”

He then handed her back the mike and stepped off the stage where he was shortly thereafter, asked to leave the event. The next morning, Kanye West’s interruption was covered on every news outlet and was covered heavily in the press. Not only that, but his interruption was also parodied on SNL and also on YouTube as well. Tumblr accounts such as kanyegate.tumblr.com, which features user-generated memes with Kanye and his “Imma let you finish” caption, started popping up and developed a strong following.

The meme itself because popular because of how shocking the event was.  In my opinion, people couldn’t really process that Kanye West had interrupted Taylor Swift, pop country idol and America’s sweetheart, in the middle of her acceptance speech to basically tell everyone that she didn’t deserve it and that the award was supposed to go to Beyonce for her “Single Ladies” video. The shock value played into the hype of this meme and because of how inappropriate it was, it became very popular to use over the Internet.

The meme was popular primarily in late 2009 when the event happened but it continued well into January 2010 before the interested died down in the 2011s. Below is a graph from Google Insights on the Interest over Time for ‘Kanye West Imma Let You Finish” searches:
